SAP has been placed in the Market Shapers category in Gartner’s first Emerging Market Quadrant assessment of integrated supply chain AI agents. The company says Joule and autonomous supply chain management can move operations from analysis toward coordinated execution.

Key points
  • SAP was named a Market Shaper in Gartner’s new supply chain AI category.
  • Joule coordinates supply chain agents through role-based assistants.
  • SAP says the agents can also execute tasks directly in enterprise systems.
  • Takeda expects a productivity increase of up to 10 percent.
  • Lemvigh-Mueller processes more than 90 percent of 100,000 annual confirmations touchlessly.

New Gartner category examines AI agents for supply chains

According to an SAP statement issued on November 3, Gartner has conducted its first formal assessment of the Integrated Supply Chain AI Agents, Established Vendors category. The consulting firm places vendors in its Market Shapers quadrant if they offer advanced, multi-agent solutions across different areas of the supply chain.

According to Gartner’s description, these AI agents can reason across multiple functions and systems, detect changes in data and then respond autonomously. Techniques such as decision modeling, knowledge graphs, digital twins and ontology layers can also support the performance of these solutions. SAP said the classification reflects what it sees as the company’s progress in integrating AI agents into supply chains.

Joule coordinates the agents

SAP’s vision is that supply chain decisions affect multiple areas at the same time. A delay from a supplier can affect production scheduling, logistics, customer commitments and financial results. In the Autonomous Supply Chain Management model, people set the goals and priorities, AI assistants coordinate the work, and agents perform tasks within predefined boundaries.

Joule’s role-specific assistants can coordinate agents operating in planning, procurement, manufacturing, transportation and operations. The Supply Chain Planning Assistant, for example, can build and simulate scenarios with agents connected to demand, inventory and capacity, while the planner evaluates potential outcomes and makes the decision.

SAP said the agents work directly in SAP Cloud ERP and the SAP supply chain management system. The statement cited the execution of production orders, the conversion of requisitions and the management of warehouse tasks as examples. Coordination can also be extended to business partners through the SAP Business Network.

Customer examples and controlled autonomy

SAP also presented three customer examples. Takeda Pharmaceuticals will use the Industry AI for regulated manufacturing solution to have agents monitor production metrics, flag deviations and initiate corrective workflows in a GxP environment. According to the company’s expectations, this could deliver up to a 10 percent increase in productivity and reduce revenue loss caused by inventory shortages by 25 percent.

Lemvigh-Mueller deployed three coordinated agents to handle supplier order confirmations. According to SAP, more than 90 percent of the 100,000 confirmations received annually are now processed touchlessly. At RWE’s offshore wind farm, Autonomous Asset Management agents analyze previous incidents, identify causes and prepare pre-filled work orders for technicians.

SAP emphasizes a gradual rollout: agents can initially provide recommendations and later execute actions within clear boundaries. The company says greater autonomy also requires transparency and accountability. This is supported by SAP Business Data Cloud, SAP Knowledge Graph, SAP AI Agent Hub and Joule Work. Gartner, however, specifically notes that its publications contain analysts’ opinions and do not constitute recommendations to select any particular vendor or product.
